The University for Development Studies (UDS) is a public university established in 1992 to address the developmental needs of northern Ghana. UDS pioneered the 'Third Trimester Field Practical Programme' (TTFPP), which requires students to spend a trimester living and working in rural communities. This unique community-based learning model has influenced development practice across Ghana. UDS offers programmes in medicine, agriculture, development studies, business, computing, education, and renewable energy. The university has campuses in Tamale (main campus) and Nyankpala (agricultural campus). UDS's medical school trains doctors who are familiar with rural health challenges, and many graduates serve in northern Ghana and other underserved areas.
